Set up your vault

Okay, this takes about 10 minutes and you only do it once. Your journal is going to live in your own Cloudflare account, so it's yours. Not mine, not anybody's. Grab your coffee and let's do it.

What we're doing Before you start 1. Make a free Cloudflare account 2. Make a free GitHub account 3. Build your vault (one button) 4. Copy your vault address 5. Open Kept and log in 6. Bring your trades in Turn on trade replay (optional) Turn on AI review (optional) Using Kept every day If something isn't working

Before you start

Why your own Cloudflare? Because your trades are personal. Your journal, your notes and your API keys sit in your own account. Kept never sees them, never stores them, and can't sell them. Cloudflare's free plan is plenty for one trader's journal.

1Make a free Cloudflare account

  1. Go to dash.cloudflare.com/sign-up.
  2. Sign up with your email and a password. Choose the Free plan if it asks.
  3. Check your email and click the link to verify your account.

Already have Cloudflare? Skip this one.

2Make a free GitHub account

  1. Go to github.com/signup and make a free account.
  2. Verify your email.
Why GitHub? Cloudflare keeps a copy of your vault's code there so it can build it for you. You won't ever have to touch it. Promise.

3Build your vault

Click this button. It opens Cloudflare's own website, not mine.

Deploy to Cloudflare
  1. Log in to Cloudflare if it asks.
  2. When it asks to connect GitHub, click Connect and then Authorize. This lets Cloudflare save your vault's code in your GitHub.
  3. Leave the names as they are (kept-vault).
  4. You'll see boxes for your secrets. Fill them in like this:
    BoxWhat to type
VAULT_PASSWORDMake up a password, at least 8 characters. Save it in your password manager or Notes. You'll type it into Kept to open your journal.
DATABENTO_KEYYour Databento key if you have one (it starts with db-). No key yet? Type none. You can add it later.
ANTHROPIC_KEYYour Anthropic key if you have one (it starts with sk-ant-). No key yet? Type none.
  5. Click Create and deploy. Give it a minute or two.
I can't see or reset your vault password, because it lives in your Cloudflare, not mine. If you forget it, you can make a new one in Cloudflare (see Change your vault password).

4Copy your vault address

  1. In Cloudflare, go to Workers & Pages (in the left menu, under Compute) and click kept-vault.
  2. Find the address that ends in .workers.dev. It looks like kept-vault.yourname.workers.dev. Copy it.
  3. Want to check it's alive? Paste it in your browser. If you see a little line of text with "app":"kept-vault" and "ready":true, you're golden.

5Open Kept and log in

Open Kept
  1. Paste your license key and click Unlock.
  2. Paste your vault address from step 4.
  3. Type your vault password from step 3.
  4. Click Open my journal. That's it, you're in.

The little pill in the corner says Synced when your journal is safe in your vault. Every trade you log saves there by itself a few seconds later.

6Bring your trades in

  1. In Kept, click Import at the top.
  2. Download your trades from your broker:
    • NinjaTrader Web or Tradovate: go to Reports, open Performance, pick your dates, and download the CSV.
    • NinjaTrader Desktop: export your trades from Trade Performance as a CSV.
  3. Drop the file into Kept. It brings in your trades with their entry and exit prices, so they're ready to replay.

Already logged some trades by hand? Importing the same day again fills in the missing prices and doesn't make doubles.

Turn on trade replay (optional)

Replay plays your trade back second by second, with your entry, your exit and your running P&L. It uses market data from Databento, on your own Databento account, so you only pay for the trades you actually replay.

  1. Make an account at databento.com and add a payment method.
  2. In Databento, go to API Keys and copy your key (it starts with db-).
  3. In Cloudflare: Workers & Pages, then kept-vault, then Settings, then Variables and Secrets.
  4. Click Add. Type: Secret. Name: DATABENTO_KEY. Value: paste your key. Click Deploy. (Already have one that says none? Click the pencil and replace it.)
  5. Back in Kept, log out and back in (or just refresh). Open the Replay tab (or tap any trade and hit Replay trade) and pick a trade.
Databento's data shows up the day after, so today's trades are ready to replay tomorrow. Each replay you open is saved in your vault, so watching it again is free.

Turn on AI review (optional)

AI review reads your trades and notes and writes you a coaching review of a day or a week. It runs on your own Anthropic account, usually a few cents a review.

  1. Make an account at console.anthropic.com, add credits, and create an API key (it starts with sk-ant-).
  2. Pick one:
    • Works on every device: add it to your vault the same way as the Databento key, named ANTHROPIC_KEY.
    • Just this device: paste it in Kept under Settings, then AI review.

AI reviews are coaching, not financial advice.

Using Kept every day

Logging in on your phone or another computer

Your license works on up to 5 devices. Open Kept, paste your license key, then your vault address and vault password. Your whole journal comes right in. Tip: on your phone, use your browser's Add to Home Screen so Kept opens like an app.

Got a new phone or laptop?

In Kept, go to Settings, then Your devices, and remove the one you don't use anymore. Already used all 5 spots and can't get to an old device? No stress: when you unlock on the new one, Kept shows your devices and you can remove one right there.

How syncing works

Kept saves on your device first, then copies to your vault a few seconds later. When you open Kept on another device, it pulls the latest from your vault. No buttons needed. If you ever want to force it, tap the Synced pill.

Sharing a day

Open a day, tap Share, and you can send a link to your mentor or your trading circle. You choose if dollar amounts show. The link lives in your vault and you can turn it off anytime in Settings, under Manage shared links.

Change your vault password

In Cloudflare: Workers & Pages, then kept-vault, then Settings, then Variables and Secrets. Click the pencil next to VAULT_PASSWORD, type a new one, and click Deploy. This logs you out everywhere, so log back in with the new one.

Backups

Your vault is your backup. Want an extra copy? In Kept, go to Settings and download a backup file anytime.

Want to delete everything?

In Cloudflare, delete the kept-vault Worker, then go to Storage & Databases, then D1, and delete the kept-vault database. It's gone for good. Nothing is left anywhere else, because nothing was ever anywhere else.

If something isn't working

"Couldn't reach your vault"

Check the address. It should end in .workers.dev with nothing after it. Paste it in your browser: if you don't see "app":"kept-vault", your vault didn't finish deploying. In Cloudflare, open kept-vault and check Deployments.

"That address isn't a Kept vault"

You probably copied a different address. Go back to Workers & Pages, click kept-vault, and copy the .workers.dev address from that page.

"Your vault has no password yet"

Add VAULT_PASSWORD in Cloudflare (see Change your vault password). It needs at least 8 characters.

"That vault password did not match"

Passwords are case sensitive. Forgot it? Make a new one in Cloudflare, then log in with that.

"Too many tries"

After a few wrong passwords your vault locks for 15 minutes to keep people out. Wait it out, then try again.

Replay says "This day is not ready yet"

Databento's data shows up the day after you trade. Try again tomorrow.

Replay says to connect market data, or Databento didn't accept the key

Check DATABENTO_KEY in your vault settings: no extra spaces, and it starts with db-. Also check your Databento account has a payment method.

The pill says "Sync off"

Your trades are still saved on your device. Kept will copy them to your vault as soon as it can reach it. If it stays off, refresh the page, and log out and back in.

"Your license is already on 5 devices"

Pick a device you don't use anymore and tap Remove right there on the unlock screen, then unlock again. That old device gets signed out within a day.

My license key won't unlock

Copy it again from Whop, under Memberships. If you just bought, give it a minute. Still stuck? Reach out to support from the Kept Settings page.
